Iceland 6: Seydisfjoredur - Hof 22-23 July

Jokulsarlon iceberg lagoon

Sun 22 July
Day trip to Seydisfjordur in the East Fjords from our AirBnB in Hallormsstadur, with an impressive windy road over the hill sand down into this picturesque port, where the ferries connect to Denmark and cruise ships call in.

Seydisfjordur

After wandering through the town, we walked up above the Fjord - having picnic lunch and then finding Ben’s sculpture:

Tvisongur: concrete amplifier sculpture that Ben navigated to - via an extreme route!

Ben’s route took us up to the right of the waterfall...!

Back to our cosy Hut near lake Lagarfljot.

Mon 23 July
This was set to be a road-trip day, heading west on Route 1 all the way to Hof, confusingly passing through Hofn on the way! We opted for the short cut over the mountains on the exciting F938 & F939: perfectly doable in summer with visibility, but one very muddy Duster at the end!

End of the amazing F939

Luckily there was a free hike-down point in Djupivigor

The Eggs of Gledivik: 34, each representing A local bird

Peaceful picnic spot

Now we were heading west on the Route 1, with clear sightings of glacier ‘tongues’ coming down from the vast Vatnajokull. Next stop, the incredible Iceberg Lagoon at Jokulsarlon with startling blue chunks of sculpted ice calved off the glacier clumped together in the shallow waters waiting to exit to the sea.

Glacier reaches the lagoon

Barnacle geese

A large section of an iceberg split off and thumped into the water as we walked around the lagoon; I captured the wobbling berg as another piece toppled off:

Then only a short drive to our hotel in Litlehof, where we broke with tradition and had a very enjoyable dinner in their restaurant (because there were no cooking facilities!).

A long day, 325km covered.
And up early tomorrow for a guided tour up a glacier....!
