Valencia : May/June 2018

Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències, Valencia

25 May - 3 June 2018
Off to Valencia for ‘half-term’, with Ben & Annie.  Or at least we would have been if Lufthansa hadn’t cancelled our flight just as we were leaving Lucy’s house in London at 8am.... So we landed 29 hours later at midnight Fri 26th and found our delightful AirBnB right in the middle of the Old Town.

We loved our week, wandering the streets of this delightful city; museums, churches, great restaurants, retail therapy and....

Ceramics Museum

... of course with Ben as our ‘creative guide’ - we visited a lot of galleries.

Joan Miró exhibition at the Modern Art museum (IVAM)

Captivating Monica Buch exhibition

And endless ‘street’ art

Claire & Andy Brinsley were also in Valencia the same week - whom we last saw in Queenstown (see blog 17 & 20 Nov2017!) - so of course we had to play with them; an afternoon on the beach, some shopping in Russaffa district where their flat is located, and a superb evening out with wonderful tapas at Jorge ‘Clooney’s’ little restaurant hidden away in a back street north of the cathedral square.

Beach day with the Brinsleys; we were forced into a cafe by this thunder storm!

The most striking Valencian ‘landmark’ has to be  Ciutat de les Arts i les Ciències. We walked 30 mins down the diverted river ‘park’ to this incredible futuristic construction designed by Spanish architects Santiago Calatrava and Felix Candela. It was started in 1996 and is still ongoing; the original budget was Euro 300m, but it’s already past that by a factor of three...!

Annie and I managed to locate a tennis club out near Playa De Cabanyal and Annie’s Spanish ‘A’ level came in very handy to book courts by phone as the online system wouldn’t accept non-locals!  We played three times early morning taking the 32 bus, and even jogged back once!

On the penultimate day, we played at 0830, then had a swim, and met Jess & Ben for a giant brunch at La Más Bonita Patacona.  Ben went back to research more galleries whilst the rest of collapsed on the beach - where I of course fell asleep so managed to get a good Brit burn-tan!

The highlight of our trip; simply being able to just wander the streets from our apartment. And the food..! Best meal had to be Ben’s birthday paella!!

Paella for four...

On the last evening I went to find the Buch exhibition which I had missed. Clearly Saturday is wedding day in Valencia as I passed six ceremonies in an hour. It also seems that tradition  dictates a large firework to welcome the bride & groom out of the church!!
